2nd day
The 23rd October was a really intense day.
In the morning we had been working in different teams depending on our nationality. We had 7 topics to talk about, (politics, education, discrimination, the Euro-crisis, environment, social networks and family). We, the Spanish people had a lot to complain about, so we gathered lots of information together and explained the real situation in Spain.
-Politics:
Spain's financial situation is not only terrible, but it's being horribly managed as well. The division of power and wealth is incredibly uneven, and the govt. is completly secretive when it comes to what they're spending our money on.
Decisions are taken without consulting the Spanish people, the media is biased, electoral promises haven't been fulfilled and corruption in politics is shockingly high.
Mariano Rajoy, Spain's president, hasn't fought for the rights and opinions of his people.
-Education:
Budget cuts in education have been harsh in Spain, even though a quality education is a right and not a priviledge, as Rajoy is leading us to believe. The educational system is constantly being changed, which won't lead to anything good. All of this has affected us directly, with longer hours, worst installations, more people per class and less teachers. If a country cuts back on education, it's cutting back on it's future.
-Xenophobia:
There is discrimination against gays, lesbians, blacks, muslims, gypsies, south Americans... As we haven't been as developed as the rest the world, many people still have dated ideals. There are large amounts of people who still support the ideals of the fascist regime that ended in 1975, who are afraid of change and to be open-mided.
-Environment:
Contamination levels in Spain are very high, especially in Madrid, where we're from. Once pollution reaches the maximum levels, politiciand increase said levels, and act as if there were no pollution any more.
Investments in crops have dropped because of irregular temperatures and rain. Also, our beautiful beaches are being destroyed because of tourism.
Unfortunately, we can't focus on our environmental problema until we solve the current economic situation.
-Euro-crisis:
It's like a domino effect which was started by bankers and wall street's speculators, who bought a large amount of short-term shares, just like in the wall street crash of 1929.
Spain is in serious trouble, and we need help. Our living standards have dropped, middle-class citizens are becoming poor whilst the rich are getting richer and the gap between rich and poor people is growing every day.
All measures taken by the govt. are long term, and aren't giving us any results. We aren't recovering, but minimizing the damage.
-Social networks:
They help us express ourselves freely and connect with other people, as well as organize strikes and make people aware of our current situation.
